Everything You Need to Know About Baby Massage
We know you might have some questions before starting your baby massage journey! Below, you’ll find answers to the most common questions parents ask about our classes, courses, and baby massage in general.
General FAQs
What is baby massage?
Baby massage is an ancient practice which has been used in many different cultures around the world for thousands of years. In many countries, infant massage is still considered a routine part of baby care, from the moment of birth until the baby is weaned and walking. It has so many physical and emotional benefits for baby’s growth and development and is also a wonderful way to bond with your little one.
What techniques do you use?
We are informed both by the wisdom of traditional practices and the latest scientific research about human health and wellbeing.
The techniques we use at Connect Baby are informed by several key research areas which provide the evidence base for how touch, movement, and parent-infant interaction support development, regulation, and bonding, including:
Occupational Science
Child development
Sensory processing
Holistic infant care & wellbeing
Neuroscience and early brain development
Psychophysiology & emotional regulation
Public health and preventative care
What age can I start massaging my baby?
You can start baby massage from birth! Our techniques are designed to be gentle and adaptable for newborns, up to 12 months of age. By adapting your position slightly for different techniques, you can continue to use the skills you’ve learned to benefit your little one throughout childhood.
What type of oil should I use for baby massage?
You can really boost the impact of your massage by using a high-quality oil or moisturiser, but at the end of the day, the magic is in the massage itself. When choosing an oil, look for something unscented, organic, cold-pressed, and free from additives, as natural as possible for your little one’s skin. Oils which are lightweight and easily absorbed are also good options. Ultimately, go with a product which feels good for you and aligns with your family—your loving touch is the most important part.
How long should each massage session last?
A full body massage for a baby typically takes 10-20 minutes, but you can tailor to your little one’s comfort level. Some babies enjoy longer massages, while others prefer shorter sessions. You might like to start with a shorter session and build it up over a couple of weeks, or use targeted massage for different parts of the body depending on your baby’s needs at the time e.g. jaw massage for teething / tummy massage for wind pain.
How often should I massage my baby?
You can massage your baby as often as they enjoy it! Many parents find that incorporating massage into their bedtime routine helps with relaxation and sleep. There are only a few strokes which we suggest limiting to a set number of reps and we cover all this in the online course and in-person classes.
What is the best age to join a class?
You can start infant massage from birth, but many parents find that around 4-6 weeks is the ideal time to join a class. By then, babies are more alert and receptive to touch, and parents are often starting to find their rhythm (also completely fine if you aren’t!). Beyond the benefits of massage, in-person classes offer a beautiful way to connect with other parents, share experiences, and build a supportive village for your postpartum stage. Whether your baby is brand new or on the move, we adapt techniques to suit their stage—there’s no wrong time to start.
Who will be massaging my baby?
Only you will massage your baby—one of the best things about infant massage is that it’s a special bonding experience between you and your little one. Touch from a trusted caregiver has incredible benefits for both baby and parent, from strengthening attachment to supporting relaxation and development.
If your baby isn’t in the mood for a massage, needs to feed, or is asleep, don’t worry! We have demo dolls available so you can still follow along and practice the techniques without any pressure. The class is all about learning at your own pace and responding to your baby’s needs.
What do I need to bring to a class?
Just bring yourself, your baby and your usual essentials (nappies, wipes, etc.). We provide massage oil, a comfy mat for your baby to lie on, a hot cup of tea and a nourishing snack—so you feel held and supported, too. Please wear something comfy and come as you are—messy mum buns welcomed!
What if my baby cries or needs to feed during class?
That’s completely normal! Our classes are baby-led and relaxed, so please feel comfortable to tend to your baby’s needs whenever necessary. We also provide demo dolls to practice on if your baby isn’t in the mood for a massage on the day.
What happens if I miss a class in the block?
In case of illness/missing a class, all massage strokes will be revised each week, so you will be able to catch up during the next class. Please avoid attending an in-person class if you or your baby are unwell.
